Letter to the Editor:
Dear Editor,
Since 2005, I have been providing free career counselling to students and parents across different regions of Assam every Saturday from 6 PM to 9 PM over the phone (09435188630). During career counselling sessions, one of the most frequently asked questions by students and parents is: ‘Which field of study leads to a high-paying job quickly?’
The answer to this question does not solely depend on a specific academic stream or degree. The path to higher earnings is determined by a combination of factors — the student’s personality, interests, skills, the current demand, future market potential etc. However, to spread awareness among the general public regarding this matter, I feel it is necessary to highlight a few important aspects. To begin with, it is important to understand that merely performing well in any academic stream—whether Arts, Science, or Commerce—is not sufficient. True success is more likely when a student selects a career path that aligns with their inner abilities, interests, and life goals. Therefore, every student should first deeply identify their personality—whether they are introverted, extroverted, realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, conventional etc. Choosing a career that matches one’s personality not only boosts confidence but also brings greater life satisfaction and increases the chances of long-term success. In today’s world, academic qualifications alone are not enough. To secure a good job, technical skills, interpersonal abilities, critical thinking, problem-solving capacity etc. are equally important. However, it is often observed that many students, despite securing high marks, fail to get desirable jobs in either the government or private sector. The main reason is that a degree alone is not enough. In today’s competitive world, it is essential to possess practical skills, applied knowledge, and the ability to continuously update oneself according to the demands of the time. Apart from jobs, one can also become self-reliant by building their own small or large enterprise or starting a business venture, which can also create employment opportunities for others.
Finally, the most important point to remember is — fruits don’t ripen instantly; they take time to mature. Whether it is a job or a business, there is no substitute for deep study, proper training, and hard work on the path to high salaries or greater income. Higher earnings are possible for those who choose skill-based courses and careers in high-demand sectors that align with their interests, personality, and current market needs.
