The toll from the floods in
Assam rose to 44 after two
minor siblings were buried
alive in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in
the state’s Goalpara town
on Thursday, NDTV reported. Their bodies were
recovered by the State Disaster Response Force. Incessant rains have hit several parts of Assam since
Monday night. Four con
struction workers had also
died due to a landslide in
Guwahati on Tuesday.

least 18 districts in Assam
are witnessing heavy showers, PTI reported. Nearly
75,000 residents living in
these districts are affected
by the floods. A road leading to Nizarapur, where
Bharat Ratna awardee Dr
Bhupen Hazarika lives, was
being cleared by the authorities after debris piled
up.According to the India
Meteorological Department, the state, along with
Meghalaya, has received
125% above normal rainfall
in the last seven days until
Wednesday.Eight out of 35
districts in Assam are
flooded due to the rising
water levels in the
Brahmaputra river and its
tributaries since the heavy
downpour, according to the
state Disaster Management

Authority.On Wednesday,
district officials in Hojai and
Dima Hasao told Scroll.in that
excess water was released
from the 275-megawatt Kopili
Hydro Electric Project situated on the Khandong
Dam.The district officials
said that the excess water
from the dam will increase the
water levels of the Kopili and
Brahmaputra rivers. This
would then impact the water
flow downstream to Hojai
and Dima Hasao, they
added.Dima Hasao Deputy
Commissioner Nazreen
Ahmed has issued an advisory restricting the movement of citizens in public
places and urged those living in vulnerable locations to
shift to relief camps.

The
Kamrup Metropolitan district administration had also
advised citizens to only step
out for emergencies or
essentials.Educational institutions in lower Assam
districts have been issued
directives by the deputy
commissioners to cancel
classes till Saturday.A red
alert is issued for Assam
and Meghalaya on Thursday, urging authorities to
swing into action. An orange alert is issued on Friday and Saturday for the
two states, warning the
authorities to be prepared
to tackle intense rainfall.In
Meghalaya, a part of the
National Highway 6, or NH
06, under the Lumshnong
Police Station area was
washed away due to landslides, according to NDTV.

buried alive in a landslide in Assam’s Goalpara town after heavy rains triggered a landslide in the area. Their dead bodies have been recovered from the
debris.The side walls of their house collapsed due to the landslide, burying
the two minors alive under its debris.

The State Disaster Response Fund
(SDRF) team in Goalpara has recovered their bodies.Six people have died so
far in landslides across Assam in the past three days. The state has registered
44 deaths due to floods and landslides this year.Some parts of the National
Highway 6 (NH06) under the Lumshnong Police Station area of Meghalaya
have caved in due to landslides triggered by incessant rains, officials said
today.The Dima Hasao district of the state has been facing floods and
landslides.While the district administration, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State Public Works Department are engaged in
the restoration works to repair the damaged roads in the district, rain waters
have flooded many parts and have submerged the roads.Meanwhile, in the
Tamulpur district, more than 7,000 people were affected after several villages here submerged in the flood waters. The water level of the rivers Borolia,
Pagladiya, and Motonga rose due to the regular rain showers for the past
couple of days.The weather office said that the ongoing spell of intense rainfall is likely to continue in the northeast and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and
Sikkim during the next five days. Some parts of the National Highway 6
(NH06) under Lumshnong Police Station area of Meghalaya have caved in
due to landslides triggered by incessant rains and only restricted movement
along the highway, which connects Southern Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and
parts of Manipur to the rest of the country. The flood situation in Assam has
worsened further after heavy and incessant rainfall across the state in the
past few days.According to an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, over 18 districts in 37 revenue circles of the state are
still reeling under flood waters.Around 74,116 people in 314 villages are
still affected by the floods, as per the ASDMA report. On the other hand, a
total of seven relief camps have been set up across the state where around
1,224 inmates are currently taking shelter.Further, three relief camps and
five relief distribution centres have been set up in Guwahati.The flood affected districts are namely Bajali, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang,
Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (M),
Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nalbari, Tamulpur and Udalguri.Meanwhile,
the Manas River is flowing above the danger level at National Highway
Road-crossing in lower Assam.The National Disaster Response Force
(NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, deployed
in the flood-affected areas are using boats to rescue people and offer relief
materials to those still stuck in flooded homes
