Guwahati, Assam | May 8, 2025: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch, observed World Red Cross Day today with a solemn and dignified ceremony commemorating the birth anniversary of Jean Henry Dunant, the visionary founder of the Red Cross Movement.

To mark the occasion, the Assam State Branch unveiled the Red Cross Memorial Monument in honor of Jean Henry Dunant, Dr. Poal Chandra Duarah, and Smt. Renuka Devi Barkataki — pioneers whose dedicated service laid the foundation for the Red Cross’s humanitarian work in Assam.

The event was graced by the Honorable Governor of Assam and President of the IRCS Assam State Branch, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya. A commemorative booklet, edited by Shri Deba Prasad Sarma, General Secretary of the IRCS Assam State Branch, was released during the ceremony. The publication highlights the invaluable contributions of the founders and their enduring legacy. The families of Dr. Duarah and Smt. Barkataki were also felicitated in recognition of their loved ones’ lifetime of humanitarian service.
