    • In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the programme is designed to foster excellence and strengthen international collaborations in higher education
    • Educational Consultants India Limited (EdCIL) has shortlisted 28 universities and over 42 participants across the Northeast region for this workshop, designed to bolster the internationalisation efforts of Indian universities

3rd October 2025, Guwahati: Educational Consultants India Limited (EdCIL), a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the British Council, UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities undertook the Capacity Building for Internationalisation of Higher Education programme in Guwahati.

This builds on the successful completion of the four-day Capacity Building programme held in Delhi from 9–12 September 2025. Under this initiative, 42 participants from 28 public and private universities across Northeast India have been nominated for the workshop. The workshop is designed to equip institutions with strategic and operational frameworks, providing the knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen global academic collaboration and support their internationalisation journey.

This initiative seeks to strengthen the ability of Indian universities to drive internationalisation while highlighting the UK’s expertise in the field. In line with the vision of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the programme aims to position the country as a global education hub by encouraging cross-border partnerships and advancing excellence in higher education.

The workshop includes modules that address skill development and effectiveness for international officers, emphasising knowledge sharing and practical outcomes to support internationalisation agendas at the participating institutions.

Previously, in September, the programme was successfully implemented with Educational Consultants India Limited (EdCIL) in Delhi with participation from over 32 representatives across 21 universities. In past, it was also delivered in collaboration with the Governments of Karnataka and Maharashtra. In Karnataka, supported by the State Higher Education Council, 58 participants from 28 universities went through the capacity building programme, strengthening the role of international offices in fostering research collaborations and enriching student experiences. Similarly, in Maharashtra, with support from the Department of Higher and Technical Education, 34 participants from 19 universities took part in the initiative, aimed at building institutional capacity for internationalisation and advancing India–UK partnerships in higher education.

Smti Pomi Baruah, ACS, Director, Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Assam says, “North-East India has the potential to emerge as a vibrant hub of global excellence in higher education, with opportunities in biodiversity, climate change, sustainable development, and cultural studies. This capacity development initiative by the British Council is both timely and strategic, inspiring participants to reimagine and expand their approaches to internationalisation. We look forward to seeing universities in the North-East emerge as vibrant centres of global collaboration, driving innovation, cross-border knowledge exchange, and inclusive growth in higher education.”

Debanjan Chakrabarti, Director East and Northeast India, British Council said, “The British Council is delighted to bring the Capacity Building for Internationalisation of Higher Education programme, soon after it was piloted in Delhi with EdCIL. Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen the capacity of universities to internationalise – in line with NEP’s recommendations – and enabling them to forge meaningful global connections. In partnership with EdCIL and aligned with NEP 2020, our vision is to ensure that the Northeast is at the forefront of India’s aspiration to emerge as a global hub of higher education. By equipping international officers with the skills and knowledge required to enhance their institutions’ international engagement, we are supporting in turning that vision into reality.”
