Serving Society or Serving the Self? -Dr. Buljit Buragohain

“Am I truly serving society, or am I cultivating a personal brand funded by the generosity of others?”

A noticeable trend in recent times is that some individuals begin their journey in “social service” with sincere intentions, often using their own time, effort, and financial resources. However, once they gain a measure of recognition, the nature of their work gradually shifts. They start seeking donations and financial support from others — still under the noble banner of serving society. Over time, what may have started as a selfless mission quietly transforms into a source of personal income.

True social service, at its core, is a selfless act — driven by compassion, empathy, and a deep commitment to the public good. Those who genuinely wish to serve must begin with their own resources, whether that means offering their time, knowledge, money, or physical effort. This foundation ensures that their actions are grounded in authenticity and moral integrity. When individuals rely primarily on others’ donations to fund their initiatives and then go on to receive awards, media attention, or social prestige, an important ethical question arises:

“Am I truly serving society, or am I cultivating a personal brand funded by the generosity of others?”

Turning social service into a full-fledged profession or business — without transparency and accountability — goes against the very spirit of service. If the driving force behind social work becomes personal benefit rather than public welfare, the credibility and intent of the effort become questionable. It is, therefore, vital that those who aspire to work for the betterment of society do so with sincerity, humility, and honesty. Accepting praise and recognition without having made a personal contribution dishonors the very principle of social service. Those who operate on funds raised from others should maintain the humility to refrain from seeking accolades for themselves.

Only when social service is rooted in genuine intent — and not in self-interest — can it contribute to building a more compassionate, ethical, and responsible society.
